Vegetable alternatives to collagen, keratin and hyaluronic acid

Only a few years ago, veganism was seen as a niche and unconventional lifestyle. Today, more and more people are choosing a plant-based diet, as well as consciously choosing natural cosmetics, free from ingredients of animal origin. Consumers select cosmetics more carefully - they are more eager to use sustainable products with the "Vegan" label.

Collagen, keratin and hyaluronic acid are raw materials which should be looked at closely. It is recommended to replace them with plant alternatives.


Collagen is the main structural protein in various connective tissues. As a cosmetic raw material, it is obtained mainly from animal skin and crow's feet. It is a popular ingredient in anti-wrinkle creams, lotions and shampoos. Large collagen molecules cannot cross the epidermal barrier and reach the deeper layers of the skin. Collagen has the ability to form a hydrophilic film that prevents transepidermal water loss.

Animal hair, hooves and horns are most often used for keratin production. It is commonly used as an ingredient in shampoos and conditioners. It makes hair more resilient, flexible and shiny. Nail conditioners are responsible for strengthening the nails and making them more resistant to mechanical damage.

KERAPLANT NPNF® is a complex of active vegetable proteins from soya, wheat and corn, which is a perfect alternative to commonly used animal keratin. The hydrolysed form improves the penetration of particles into the hair. It is a film-forming and conditioning ingredient, easily binds to hair proteins, restoring them and regenerating damage.

Hyaluronic acid

Although nowadays hyaluronic acid is produced mainly biotechnologically, it is sometimes obtained from rooster combs. In the cosmetics industry, hyaluronic acid has gained popularity due to its anti-aging effect, which smoothes the skin and provides it elasticity.

HYALUROSMOOTH® is a natural high molecular weight polysaccharide, obtained from the seeds of the Indian plant Cassia angustifolia. It stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen. This polysaccharide forms a protective film on the skin surface, providing immediate and long-lasting hydration. It gives the feeling of softness and resilience and restores the skin's natural glow. Therefore, it can easily act as a hyaluronic acid in plant-based cosmetics.
